Exercise Benefits of Stationary Bikes
Stationary cycling is still one of the most popular methods of
cardiovascular exercise used by many, including trained athletes.
The stationary bike is rated number 2, behind the treadmill, in
calorie-burning efficiency. The quality stationary bikes come with
many modern options such as multiple programming options and smooth
pedaling.
There is the traditional upright model that now comes with mobile
handle bars which tones and develops the legs (quadriceps muscles)
and the upper body as well. Although stationary cycling resembles
the movement of cycling on a bicycle, the upright model may not
be a good choice for those with lower back pain.
There are now more modern recumbent – style versions that
allow you to sit back against a back rest in a reclining position.
It’s like sitting in a chair-like seat with your legs in front
of you. These bikes take a lot of pressure off your lower back,
while still providing you with a good workout. Here are come advantages
of these cycles:
• They have all the benefits of the upright versions
• They train the hamstring (rear leg) and the gluteal (rear)
muscles more
• Better alternatives for people with lower back, knee and
joint problems
Most stationary bikes use either a fly wheel or a fan system. With
a flywheel you can increase resistance without increasing speed
whereas the fan requires you to pedal faster to increase the intensity
level.
Most bikes come with pedal straps. You can remove them if you wish.
The use of pedal straps however, increases stability and works the
leg muscles on both upward and downward strokes.
Features of various stationary bikes:
• Track distance, monitor heart rate
• Automatic intensity level adjustment
• Come with preset programs including weight loss and strength
training type features
• Some models allow you to pedal backwards
Home vs. Health club versions
The gym versions usually offer more options including a variety
of preset programs and flashier graphics. The home varieties are
more basic but offer workouts comparable to those in the gym. Although,
you can buy the exact ones used at health clubs if you are willing
to spend more money.
The cost of standard home versions is $200-$800, whereas the gym
models are in the $2000 range. The sit-down types usually cost $300-$400
more than the upright models. You can also turn your own bike into
a stationary bike by placing it on a stand which costs about $200.
Here are some buyer tips:
• Choose comfortable bikes. Make sure the size of the bike
is right for you, and not too big or too small. Choose a padded
seat with a shape that’s most comfortable for you.
• The flywheel must turn with ease and should be fairly quiet.
It shouldn’t make loud squeaking or other noises - make sure
it’s not off balanced.
• If safety for others is important, choose flywheels that
are encased, not exposed.
Search the Internet to find various types of models that offer
the options you want and are within your price range. Go to a local
health club and check them out there. Shopping online has the advantage
of choosing the right product and getting it shipped right to your
door.
